About 15 years ago, Richard became involved with the YaleBoston community.  First he served as an alumni interviewer, and later he sat on the Board of Directors.  He eventually began to organize volunteers at the Excel Academy—an urban charter school—and back in 2009, when the Yale Day of Service began, he volunteered to coordinate the effort for the state of Massachusetts.

As an active YaleBoston member, Richard Bowen hopes that by coordinating the day of service, he will inspire other alumni to create change.  He also hopes it will lead them to form stronger bonds and maybe forge some new ones. “What I have learned is that you are not likely to change the world in a day, but you may change your perspective and enrich your life by being in touch with interesting people from the community and from the Yale community".
